Gen Z is the Next Workforce--are you optimizing recruiting for them?

The dominant generations are shifting at work--Gen Z employees are slowly becoming more and more common. And they are a wave you're going to want to ride.

This leaves the question--are you ready for Gen Z to enter your workforce, and are you optimizing recruiting to them?

Gen Z at Work

Gen Z employees offer many skills you'll want to add to your team.

The first wave of Gen Z has already entered the workforce--that's already apparent. But why should you care?

First, for your company to survive, you are going to need Gen Z employees because of the percentage they represent of the workforce. By the end of 2020, Gen Z will make up to forty percent of the working and consumer population. The fact of the matter is that if you want employees, some of them are eventually going to have to be Gen Z.

But the importance of having them work for you goes far beyond just their sheer numbers.

Gen Z have a number of quality of characteristics that make them ideal work candidates, including:

  1. Inherent technological ease. As technology natives, members of Gen Z automatically understand technology better and are very savvy in learning and adapting to new programs.

  2. Workplace ambition. While younger generations typically get a bad rap about having everything handed to them, Gen Z has proven to be self-driven and ambitious. 76% of Gen Z see themselves responsible for driving their own career, and over half of them would work odd hours for higher pay.

  3. New viewpoints. As members of the most recent workforce, Gen Z offers important insights and opinions that you won't get from anyone else--insights that are important for keeping your industry current.

What companies are attracting Gen Z

Tech companies offer many strategies you could learn from.

According to Glassdoor, the top 3 employers that are currently attracting Gen Z employees are Google, Amazon, and Salesforce. What are these employers doing right?

Large tech companies offer Gen Z employees something that they want most: a chance for career growth, flexibility, and a sense of purpose.

There's a common misconception that younger employees don't care about much in their careers past money. Believing this myth will prevent you for hiring driven, invested, and overall hardworking employees.

How to attract new Gen Z employees

Gen Z has a lot to offer. So what does your company offer them?

So what can you do to incentivize new Gen Z members to hand you their resume?

In short, offer them what they want in a workplace.

That is to say, offer them a workplace that will appreciate who they are. Provide opportunities for them to grow as people and move up in a company. Make sure your workplace is up to date technologically to give them an environment that they can thrive and be productive in. Make your office a place where they can learn instead of doing monotonous labor.

At the end of the day, you are going to have to signal to Gen Z that you are a preferred employer.

Remember, what you're doing isn't just attracting a new demographic of workers. It is investing in your employees. The more you invest in your workers, the more they will give back to you.
